Overdraft Protection

Overdraft Protection for Your Account

When you're short on cash, overdrafts can happen. Understanding your overdraft options with Apple can help you avoid fees and undue stress.

What is an Overdraft?

An overdraft occurs when you do not have enough money as an available balance in your account to cover a transaction, but we pay it anyways.

Overdrafts can occur in a number of ways. You can overdraw your account through checks, ATM transactions, electronic transfers, debit card purchases, automatic bill payments and electronic or in-person withdrawals. No matter how an overdraft occurs, overdraft protection can provide a safety net for your account.

Understanding Your Overdraft Options

Life happens, and overdrafts do too. If you run short on cash, have unplanned expenses or make an honest mistake balancing your account, we can help you out.

Overdraft Savings Transfer

What It Is

If your primary checking account overdrafts, Overdraft Savings Transfers can prevent overdraft fees at no additional cost with your checking account.

How It Works

With an Overdraft Savings Transfers, we will first attempt to pay the overdraft at no charge from your linked savings account (your membership savings account) before using ODP. You may select up to three accounts – savings or personal lines of credit – to cover possible overdrafts. We will debit the accounts in the order you select them.

Getting Started

To access this benefit, you must have previously enrolled, and the account(s) must have sufficient funds available to cover the overdraft.

To setup which account(s) to use for Overdraft Savings Transfers, log in to Online Banking and click Overdraft Protection from the Account menu. You can also opt in by speaking with an Apple Team Member at a branch, via chat within Apple FCU Online or App or at 703-788-4800.

Signature Line of Credit

What It Is

A Signature Line of Credit may help you cushion your spending and prevent you from paying overdraft fees. A Signature Line of Credit is an excellent tool to help you cover transactions that exceed the balance of your Apple Checking account.

How It Works

If you have an unexpected shortness of funds, the amount of the overdraft will be charged to your Signature Line of Credit. You can use your Signature Line of Credit for overdraft protection, long-term projects, emergency expenses and more.

Overdraft Privilege

What It Is

Overdraft Privilege (ODP) is a benefit that we offer to Apple members to provide you with peace of mind in case you overdraw your account. Should an overdraft occur, ODP will allow you to complete your transaction. This will reduce the chance for declined transactions and the potential for multiple merchant fees.

How It Works

Apple, at its sole discretion, will pay the item(s) up to the authorized Overdraft Privilege limit and charge the account the Credit Union’s standard Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF)/ODP fee of $25 for each item that overdraws the account.

Getting Started

To opt in for ODP, log in to Online Banking and complete the "Overdraft Privilege (ODP) Enrollment" form found under the Account menu.

If you do not wish to have ODP on your account, you can opt out at any time. Download and fill out the "Overdraft Privilege Opt Out Request" form and submit the form by mailing it to P.O. Box 1200, Fairfax, VA 22038-1200 or faxing it to 703-359-9432.

Should the account remain overdrawn beyond 30 days of the initial transaction posting, ODP privileges will be suspended temporarily and the service frozen.

Frequently Asked Questions

To opt in, please log in to Online Bankingand complete the Overdraft Privilege (ODP) Enrollment form found under the Account Tools menu. To opt out of ODP, complete the Overdraft Privilege Opt Out Request form and fax it to 703-667-8712 or mail to: P.O. Box 1200, Fairfax, VA 22038-1200. You may also visit any Apple FCU branch to opt out of Overdraft Privilege.

Overdraft Privilege is offered as a benefit of doing business with Apple. Opting in to ODP is free, but you may incur fees if your account is overdrawn.

Yes, Apple FCU will charge a fee of $25 each time we pay an overdraft. You will be limited to three (3) overdraft fees (also referred to as NSF or Courtesy Pay) per day. Overdrafts in excess of three (3) per day will clear with no fee up to a total of negative available balance of $1,000.

If you do not opt in to Overdraft Privilege, Apple FCU will abide by our standard overdraft practices.

Under our standard overdraft practice, Apple will authorize and pay overdrafts of the following types of transactions:

  • Checks and other transactions made using your Checking account number
  • Automatic bill payments

Apple will not authorize and/or pay overdrafts for the following types of transactions unless requested by the member:

  • ATM transactions
  • Everyday debit card transactions

Overdrafts are paid at Apple's discretion, which means the Credit Union does not guarantee that overdrafts will always receive authorization for transaction payment.

If a transaction is not authorized, your overdraft transaction will be declined.

You may have both Signature Line of Credit and ODP on the same account.

You can set up low balance alerts through the Apple FCU Online or the Mobile App. To set up low-balance alerts for your account, select Accounts, Manage Card, and then Update Alert Thresholds.

You may enroll one primary checking account in ODP. The Second Checking account, Student Checking and any other personal checking accounts, belonging to the same member, are not eligible for ODP.

Each ODP fee represents a separate overdraft transaction. You will not incur multiple ODP fees for a single transaction. However, you may incur multiple ODP/NSF fees for transactions presented more than once.

For example, if you make a transaction in which there are not enough available funds, you may incur an NSF fee. If you re-present the transaction and your available fund and ODP coverage are sufficient in covering the charge, an ODP fee will be assessed.

There is no fee for a declined debit card transaction. Funds on hold due to a debit card transaction authorization hold can cause a fee if there are not enough funds available to pay the transaction.

No. Enrolling in ODP does not guarantee that we will pay overdrafts. Apple FCU pays overdrafts at our discretion. If we do not authorize and pay an overdraft, your transaction will be declined and/or your electronic transfer/Check will be returned unpaid.

You can easily opt out at any time by filling out our "Overdraft Privilege Opt Out Request" form or by phone at 703-788-4800. If you prefer, you may also opt out at any branch location, by faxing requests to 703-667-8712, or by mailing the requests to: P.O. Box 1200, Fairfax, VA 22038-1200.

The Available Balance is the amount of funds in your account that is available for withdrawal or use at that moment.

The Available Balance takes into account holds that are placed on funds in the account or pending transactions that have been authorized but may not yet have been processed (posted) such as debit card POS transactions, online transfers, ATM transactions and pending deposits (subject to any applicable holds on funds).

It does not include items such as checks that you have written, but that have not yet cleared your account.

You can check your Available Balance using Apple FCU Online or Mobile App.
