7 Tips to Decrease Costs and Keep Your Sweet Treat

Simple solutions for keeping the fun in your budget.

7 Tips to Decrease Costs and Keep Your Sweet Treat

A cup of coffee. Dining out. A movie with a friend. These small joys add richness to your week. They’re also some of the biggest budget-busters for young adults today. When these expenses go unchecked, it can lead to debt and anxiety around finances.

At Apple FCU, we believe financial responsibility and the sweet things in life can go hand-in-hand. With a thoughtful budget and occasional adjustments, you can save more money without the FOMO.

Here are seven ways to save money without giving up your sweet treats.

1. Create a “Fun Budget”

Instead of giving up self-care or outings with friends, give yourself a Fun Budget each pay period. Your Fun Budget is for spending on whatever makes you smile, no guilt or second-guessing involved.

2. Friends’ Night In Instead of Out

At the end of a busy week, it’s nice to unwind with friends over dinner or drinks. Instead of going out, try hosting a potluck dinner, game night or stream a new movie. Staying in one night a month can help you save big over time.

3. Use Those Rewards Apps

Your favorite grocery stores, restaurant chains and even your pharmacy are constantly giving out freebies and discounts on their apps. Check for deals and use them when you shop. You’ll be saving, and maybe even earning cash back, in no time.

4. Try the “One Fancy, One Basic” Rule

If expensive buys tempt you, indulge sparingly and choose the lower-cost option the next time you shop. For example, if ice cream is a must-have on your grocery list, go ahead and grab the fancier brand you’ve been eyeing. Next time, you'll compromise by going with the cheaper brand.

5. Perfect Recipes for Three At-Home Meals

Resist the takeout urge by perfecting at least three easy, tasty recipes. Buying your own ingredients + no delivery fees = saving hundreds every year, plus other added benefits.

6. Do a Quarterly Subscriptions Audit

Every three months, take a look at your subscriptions and memberships. Cancel what you haven't used or doesn't bring you value, and dedicate that money to your savings goals instead.

7. Buy Generic for Everyday Things

A lot of your daily staples shouldn't be the big names at the top prices. A few things that are just as good at the lower prices include:

  • Cleaning supplies
  • Over-the-counter medicine
  • Pantry basics.
