In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, ensuring your online safety is more critical than ever. With cyber threats becoming increasingly sophisticated, protecting your personal information and financial assets is more important than ever before.
At Apple Federal Credit Union, your digital safety is not just a priority but a commitment we uphold. We've curated five straightforward yet powerful steps to help you navigate the online world, bolster your digital defenses and improve your peace of mind.
5 Steps to Keep Yourself Safe Online
1. Strengthen Your Passwords
One of the easiest ways for cybercriminals to access your accounts is through weak passwords. The longer and more unusual your passwords, the harder it will be for cyber criminals to crack.
Make sure to create strong, unique passwords for each of your online accounts. Aim for a combination of letters, numbers and special characters, and avoid using easily guessable information, such as birthdays or pet names.
One of the best ways to create difficult-to-crack passwords is to use the Three Random Words method, in which you use three random words to construct a password that is easy for you to remember but difficult for hackers to guess.
As we expand our digital lives, many of us have gone from having a handful of passwords to upwards of 100 passwords to remember. To help you maintain and store your various passwords, consider using a reputable password manager to securely store and generate complex passwords for you.
2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication
Creating a strong password is one of the best ways to keep unauthorized individuals from accessing your accounts. Another way to keep them out is to enable two-factor authentication.
Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of verification, such as a code sent to your phone or email, in order to log into your account.
Enable two-factor authentication wherever possible, especially for sensitive accounts like Online Banking and email. This way, even if someone manages to obtain your password, they'll still need additional verification to access your account.
3. Stay Vigilant Against Phishing Attacks
One of the most devastating ways that hackers gain access to your accounts is through phishing attacks.
Phishing attacks are deceptive attempts by cybercriminals to trick you into providing sensitive information, such as login credentials or financial details. It occurs when an attacker pretends to be a trusted individual and dupes a victim into opening an email or text message containing malware.
So, how do you learn to spot a phishing attempt? Phishing attempts tends to have a few tell-tale signs that set them apart from genuine communications about your sensitive accounts:
- Unfamiliar tones or greetings
- Grammar and spelling errors
- Inconsistencies in email addresses, links or domain names
- Threats or sense of urgency
- Suspicious attachments
- Requests for credentials, payment information or other personal details.
When in doubt, always verify the legitimacy of the sender and never share sensitive information unless you're certain of the recipient's identity.
4. Keep Your Devices and Software Updated
Regularly updating your devices and software is crucial for staying protected against security vulnerabilities.
Old software is vulnerable to hackers because they've identified new ways to break into what was, at one time, the best available protection. Software updates are there to patch up these security vulnerabilities and keep your accounts and devices safe against cyberattacks.
Enable automatic updates whenever possible to ensure you're running the latest security patches and fixes. This applies not only to your computer and smartphone but also to your apps and antivirus software.
5. Monitor Your Accounts Regularly
At the end of the day, no one knows your accounts and financial habits better than you. Make it a habit to monitor your bank accounts, credit cards and other financial accounts regularly for any suspicious activity.
Keep an eye out for unfamiliar transactions or charges and report them immediately to your financial institution. You can also set up alerts and notifications for account activity so you can quickly detect any unauthorized access.
The sooner you identify and address potential security breaches, the better you can mitigate any potential damage.
