Where Member Feedback Meets Innovation

When you think about technology at Apple FCU, you may think about the everyday tools you use to manage your finances, like within Digital Banking or speaking with a rep in our Contact Center. These are great examples of services that have transformed Apple FCU member experiences for the better, and I applaud the teams who run them so smoothly. I’m excited to share that Apple FCU has even more upgrades coming soon—and some available now that you might have missed.

My role in our innovation started two years ago: Apple FCU created the VP of Retail Strategy and Innovation role, and I was hired shortly after to act as a bridge between our branches and IT. I spend my time listening to feedback across various areas—frontline and members alike—and identifying common challenges that can be improved with modern innovation.

Every project I work on with these two teams starts with the same question: How can we improve experiences for our members and our employees? Whether that's introducing new services like Virginia Mobile ID, improving self-service options through Ava or exploring new ways to support our staff behind the scenes, the goal is always the same: removing friction to create a better experience for the people we serve.

At the Core of Convenience: Virginia Mobile ID

This past July, we began accepting Virginia Mobile ID in all of our branches across Northern Virginia, making us the first financial institution on the East Coast to do so. As more people turn to their phones for everything from digital wallets to travel information, we recognized that Mobile ID was a natural next step and are excited to offer this convenience to our members.

Federal organizations and select businesses across Virginia have already started to streamline their processes by accepting Mobile ID. Whether you're in the security line at Dulles, enjoying a beverage at your favorite local brewery or getting help at one of our branches, scanning your Mobile ID saves you the trouble of digging through your pockets or purse, or the horrible feeling when you realize you forgot your wallet at home.

We hope you'll give it a try the next time you come to visit us. Download the Virginia Mobile ID app through the App Store or Google Play, and your ID will have a new, secure home right in your phone.

Making Self-Service Smarter with Ava

If you've visited our website, you've probably noticed the "Let's talk!" button in the bottom right corner of the screen. That's Apple's Virtual Assistant, Ava. She's the product of a long and carefully considered development process, with even more exciting updates still ahead.

When we first introduced Ava, our goal was simple: to help our members get answers faster. If you need help with a straightforward request, like opening a new account or locating your member number, Ava can help you find your answer without waiting in a line or being put on hold.

We have even bigger plans for Ava to give members more options for self-service. As part of a pilot program, Ava has started taking a small portion of our calls after hours. We know that sometimes, a question just can’t wait until morning. Whether you’re chatting online or speaking with Ava over the phone, more of the information you need is now just a conversation away, any time of day.

We hope you’ll reach out to Ava the next time you have a question. Member interactions are crucial to help our team understand how she’s performing: we always look back to these conversations to identify where she handled something well, and pinpoint the moments she couldn't help a member get what they needed. Every week, we're adjusting how she responds, sharpening her understanding of what members are asking, and working closely with our technology partners to roll out improvements.

We know there will always be times when members prefer to talk to a person, no matter how capable Ava becomes. That's by design. Ava is built to handle the routine questions, so our team has more time and focus for the moments that need a human touch: a complex case, a sensitive question or simply a conversation you'd rather have with someone who knows you. We'll always be here for that.

AI as a Tool, Not a Replacement

We're constantly expanding on AI platforms like Ava, as well as building out new ones that, one day, will streamline the way our teams find information without needing to search through files or message another department for help. We're excited about the way these tools (and more innovations to come) will help us transform the work we do.

With that being said, I know there's a lot of mixed feelings about AI—specifically, the fear that AI will replace hardworking, talented employees. That is not our goal here at Apple FCU. We believe AI is a tool that should enhance our team's work, not take it from them.

We wouldn't be where we are today without the people who serve members in-person or do the behind-the-scenes work to help us expand. By building these in-depth AI tools, prioritizing a measured approach to AI implementation and establishing secure guardrails, we are confident our team will feel more efficient in their work.

Giving Members More Choices

At Apple FCU, we're not implementing these kinds of technology just for the sake of it. We're intentional with every change we make, ensuring that these innovations are based off feedback from both our members and our team, and that they will make the lives of those who bank here and work with us easier.

At the end of the day, our goal is to give members more choices in how they interact with us. Some members love the social experience of coming into a branch and seeing up-front how their issues get resolved. On the other hand, some members don't have the time for anything other than quick self-servicing or, if they really must, sending a message via our Mobile App.

While I've been here for two years now, our reputation has been on my radar for much longer. I know Apple FCU has long been known for personal and tailored services, and truly showing up as your community financial institution. The changes we make are intended to enhance this.

By investing in technology thoughtfully and intentionally, we're opening doors for members to connect with Apple FCU whenever, wherever and however they choose. That's what innovation means to me: using technology to save people time, reduce frustration and create a better experience for every member we serve.
