Little Moments Give Big Rewards
This summer, the World Cup took over all of our feeds. Across our branches and headquarters, our teams bonded over their favorite countries, swapped stickers and tuned into the games on breaks.
It was the perfect snapshot of what I love most about Apple: our people showing up with energy, connecting with one another and finding joy during the workday. It’s also why Apple FCU continues to earn recognition from organizations such as American Banker and Newsweek for being a great place to work and our service to our members.
We had another reason to celebrate this summer: for the fourth year in a row, WTOP News (formerly Washington Post) named Apple FCU a Top Workplace in the Washington, D.C. region. It may not carry quite the same buzz as the World Cup, but this recognition reflects something just as meaningful: the hard work happening at every level of our organization, the ongoing conversations we have with our teams, and our shared commitment to making Apple FCU a place where people feel valued, supported and proud to show up.
Why These Awards Matter Now
Since COVID restrictions eased, we’ve adopted a variety of work environments. Through these changes, our focus has been on making Apple FCU a workplace all employees are excited to come to.
Our Fun Committee has been a driving force behind that effort. Whether it's a holiday celebration, a surprise giveaway or a "Happle" Hour to reconnect with coworkers, they make sure there's always something to look forward to.
We're also finding ways to show appreciation beyond office hours. This summer, we’ve been doing “Fuelish Fridays” giveaways to show our team our thanks. Twice a month, ten employees are randomly selected to receive a bonus in their paycheck to help cover the cost of filling up. It's a small gesture with a real impact, helping people get to the branches, the office and the moments that matter most: like a school pickup or a friend's birthday.
None of this would be possible without employee feedback. What our team tells us matters, and it shapes how we move forward. That's why we hold companywide town halls every other month: they give employees a direct line to leadership, and just as importantly, they give leadership a chance to really listen to every idea, question or concern.
Sometimes, a great idea isn't feasible right away. When that happens, we don't let it go; we bring it back into the conversation, whether at the next town hall or during planning for the year ahead.
Commitment to Community and Culture
Community and culture sit at the center of everything we do at Apple FCU. We want every employee, regardless of background or identity, to feel safe, welcomed and celebrated. Today, we have six Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) advocating for employees across identity and background, each one created and led by passionate team members. Throughout the year, they host events that build connection, spark learning and, of course, bring more engagement into the mix.
Our ERGs mean a great deal to me, and I'm proud of how strongly Apple continues to stand behind this work. Every ERG leader puts in real effort to strengthen community and culture, and because each group has a sponsor from our Executive Leadership Team, that commitment reaches all the way to the top. They play a vital role in building trust and camaraderie across the company. They help people feel truly seen—and when employees can bring their authentic selves to work, everyone benefits.
Why We Love Apple FCU
At every new-hire orientation, I emphasize why employee engagement matters so much to us. Part of that presentation is a simple question: why did you choose Apple FCU?
The answers are almost always about reputation.
"I've seen really good things online."
"I love how committed you are to giving back to the community."
"I have a friend who works here, and they genuinely love their job."
Honestly, none of that surprises me. I was working at another credit union when Apple FCU first caught my attention. My predecessor served as Apple's Chief People Officer for more than 20 years, and she was a valued colleague and friend of mine. Year after year, she told me how much she loved coming to work. So, when she decided to retire and the position opened up, I didn't hesitate to raise my hand.
Because of her, I knew Apple FCU was a special place. We're one of many organizations in a bustling region, but we're known as a place where employees are happy, aligned with the mission and supported by leadership that genuinely tries to do right by them.
That kind of reputation doesn't happen by accident. It's an intentional, strategic vision cast by our leadership team and supported by our Board, to cultivate an environment and a mission people are excited to be a part of. My own path here, and everything I hear from new hires, is proof of how far that promise has carried us.
What Makes Apple FCU a Great Place to Work?
In the end, what sets Apple apart is our people. It's the coworker who makes a new hire feel at home. It's the branch team celebrating a job well done together. It's the ERG leader organizing an event so colleagues can learn something new about each other's communities. It's every individual who helps make Apple not just a place to work, but a place to belong.
Being named a great place to work by WTOP, Newsweek, American Banker and more is truly an honor, but more than that, it's a reminder of the responsibility that comes with it: to keep building, keep listening and keep improving. Becoming an employer of choice is never a finished project. It grows alongside us. And at Apple FCU, I'm proud to say it keeps growing in a way that brings us all closer together.
